The U16 boys won today, moving on to the quarterfinals of State Cup!

The Santa Cruz County Breakers 90 boys won their Round of 16 match in the California State Cup Tournament Saturday against South San Jose USA 17 in Morgan Hill. The Breakers began the scoring early in the game -- Martin Monroy scored the first goal on an assist by Brian Lopez. The second goal followed quickly, with Omar Reyes-Rincon scored on a pass from Josue Madueno-Valenzuela. USA 17 scored late in the first half. With 6 saves by goalkeeper Kevin Halasz, the Breakers were able to hold on, finishing the game with a 2-1 final score. The Breakers go on to the State Cup Quarterfinals next Saturday, playing San Juan Lightning White in Turlock.

U16 Breakers 90 Team - District Cup Champions!

The Santa Cruz County Breakers U16 Boys are District II Cup champions for the second year in a row. Martin Monroy and Josue Madueno were named MVPs by Coach Juan Roman -- they were the team's top scorers with 4 goals each across the 2 days. Other goal-scorers were Trini Quintero, Rogelio Picazo, Edgar Diaz, and Shakaim Redrovan. Goalkeeper Kevin Halasz earned three shut-outs including the final game against AR PAC Azteca, where the score was 3-0.

Breakers 90 Boys Champions at NHB Tournament!

The Breakers 90 boys were champions of flight 2 at NHB Cup on Labor Day weekend 2006. Defeating several top Nor-Cal teams (Mustang 5-0, Davis 2-0, and Ballistic 3-0) in group play, Breakers goal scorers included Martin Monroy, Edgar Diaz, David Mondragon, Omar Reyes, and Josue Madueno. The team's task was made tougher by an injury that took starting keeper Kevin Halasz out early in the tournament.

But Edgar Calderon stepped up and did an outstanding job as keeper -- earning shut-outs in every game he played. The Breakers played a tight semi-final match against Porterville Juventus, but came out victorious with a 1-0 score. The Breakers then faced the Palmdale Thunder in the final; Palmdale had defeated the Breakers in their only loss in group play. Brian Lopez scored the first goal of the game, and Martin Monroy added a second, giving the Breakers the championship with a score of 2-0. This earns the team an automatic invitation to the first flight for next year in this Premier Elite tournament. Coach Juan Roman named Martin Monroy and Edgar Diaz as MVPs for the tournament.
